DesignAday

My name is Jack Moffett. I am an Interaction Designer with over ten years of experience. According to Herb Simon, that makes me an expert, so I must have something worth sharing. I have started this venture as an exercise to spur critical thinking about my chosen profession. I hope that others may find it thought provoking as well.

DesignAday will present a brief thought about Design every weekday.

In the Details: Speedometer

The speedometer on the dash of my new Mazda5 is quite large, which makes sense, as it is typically the most important gauge, or at least the one that you are most often glancing at. However, the gauge goes all the way to 140 mph. The fastest I ever go is 70, which is the top speed limit on West Virginia’s section of I-79. That means that I will only ever use half of the speedometer. Within that amount of space, they only managed to fit in actual digits for every 20 miles (i.e. 20, 40, 60, 80, etc.). This makes it more difficult to keep to, say, 45 mph. It’s not as quick a glance.
