DesignAday

My name is Jack Moffett. I am an Interaction Designer with over ten years of experience. According to Herb Simon, that makes me an expert, so I must have something worth sharing. I have started this venture as an exercise to spur critical thinking about my chosen profession. I hope that others may find it thought provoking as well.

DesignAday will present a brief thought about Design every weekday.

You Can Never Leave

To anyone who has been reading this blog regularly, it is no secret that I choose to use Macintosh computers. I use MS Windows as little as possible. Of course, given the fact that my company develops software for Windows, and the majority of my coworkers use Windows, I do have to work with it regularly. I’m continually amazed by the decisions that have been made in the design of the UI.

Last week, for instance, I had installed the WebEx MeetMeNow client on one of our Windows boxes so that I could demo an application. When I was done using the machine, I opened the Start menu to log out (that’s a topic for another day), and was blocked. A bubble was displaying right overtop of the log out button, informing me that I had installed new software.

No duh! Yes, I know, I just installed it. Get out of my way and let me leave!

This happened to me again the next time I used the machine. I suppose I’m going to have to open the “All Programs” menu to get it to stop.
