DesignAday

My name is Jack Moffett. I am an Interaction Designer with over ten years of experience. According to Herb Simon, that makes me an expert, so I must have something worth sharing. I have started this venture as an exercise to spur critical thinking about my chosen profession. I hope that others may find it thought provoking as well.

DesignAday will present a brief thought about Design every weekday.

wrote the other day about my disappointment with Chrysler’s new line of minivans. We had been impressed with the Toyota Sienna. Yesterday, we made our down-payment on a new Mazda5. Our decision came down to a few main points:

  1. Size: My wife wants something smaller than our current Voyager, but we need something big enough to pack for long trips. The Mazda5 has significantly less trunk space than a minivan, but a good bit more than a car. With the addition of a roof rack to cover our edge cases, we should be able to manage.
  2. Gas Mileage: We’re thinking greener. We would like a hybrid, but there aren’t any hybrid minivans yet. The Mazda5 gets much better gas mileage than the Sienna.
  3. Price: We were able to get the Mazda5 completely tricked out (e.g. heated seats, DVD player, moon roof, etc.) for $5,000 less than the mid-level Toyota.

We like the styling of the Mazda, the color, and the interior features. I imagine I’ll have more to say about the details after I’ve had the chance to take it for a spin.
