I wrote the other day about my disappointment with Chrysler’s new line of minivans. We had been impressed with the Toyota Sienna. Yesterday, we made our down-payment on a new Mazda5. Our decision came down to a few main points:
- Size: My wife wants something smaller than our current Voyager, but we need something big enough to pack for long trips. The Mazda5 has significantly less trunk space than a minivan, but a good bit more than a car. With the addition of a roof rack to cover our edge cases, we should be able to manage.
- Gas Mileage: We’re thinking greener. We would like a hybrid, but there aren’t any hybrid minivans yet. The Mazda5 gets much better gas mileage than the Sienna.
- Price: We were able to get the Mazda5 completely tricked out (e.g. heated seats, DVD player, moon roof, etc.) for $5,000 less than the mid-level Toyota.
We like the styling of the Mazda, the color, and the interior features. I imagine I’ll have more to say about the details after I’ve had the chance to take it for a spin.
