DesignAday

My name is Jack Moffett. I am an Interaction Designer with over ten years of experience. According to Herb Simon, that makes me an expert, so I must have something worth sharing. I have started this venture as an exercise to spur critical thinking about my chosen profession. I hope that others may find it thought provoking as well.

DesignAday will present a brief thought about Design every weekday.

Nokia has a video up on YouTube showing a futuristic concept device based on nanotechnologies. While the technology itself is quite cool, I appreciated the video as an example of good concept sketching. Rather than creating high-fidelity renderings with 3-D modeling software, they used elegant animation. It clearly communicates that this is a concept only—not something currently in production or even on the drawing board.

I especially like the use of a pseudo-scenario. It keeps everything very general. There is enough to give you context, but no specific use cases. You know she is talking on the phone, but you can’t tell what she is saying. It gives us hints as to what such a device might be used for. It puts the emphasis on the qualities of nanotech that are being demonstrated, rather than the features of the device itself.
