DesignAday

My name is Jack Moffett. I am an Interaction Designer with over ten years of experience. According to Herb Simon, that makes me an expert, so I must have something worth sharing. I have started this venture as an exercise to spur critical thinking about my chosen profession. I hope that others may find it thought provoking as well.

DesignAday will present a brief thought about Design every weekday.

I'm a Designer

On Sunday, as I was walking between the River Club and the Sheraton on my way to another session, I realized I was walking beside David Armano, author of the blog Logic + Emotion. I’ve been reading his blog regularly for some time now, so I introduced myself and told him so. He asked what I do, and I explained that I worked for a small software development firm. He responded, “Wow, it’s nice to know that software developers are reading the blog.” My immediate reply was, “Oh, I’m an Interaction Designer.” When I reflected upon this later, it occurred to me that, even though I have been “developing software” for over ten years, I still don’t consider myself to be a “Software Developer”. Interaction Design is much larger than that, and though software is my bread and butter, it is not the definition of my talents, skills, or experience.
