DesignAday

My name is Jack Moffett. I am an Interaction Designer with over ten years of experience. According to Herb Simon, that makes me an expert, so I must have something worth sharing. I have started this venture as an exercise to spur critical thinking about my chosen profession. I hope that others may find it thought provoking as well.

DesignAday will present a brief thought about Design every weekday.

In the Details: Head Phone

One of my favorite iPhone features has nothing to do with the innovative multi-touch screen or the various applications that make it so useful. As easy and fun as the iPhone’s interface is to use, there are times when you don’t even want to be bothered with it. In those instances, the headphones are the primary input device. On the cord that extends to the right ear is a small, rectangular bulge. I’m interrupted quite often during a typical day in the office. A single squeeze of this little box pauses playback. I can answer a developer’s question and then give it another squeeze to resume listening. If a phone call comes in, the audio fades out as the ringtone begins. One squeeze answers the call. A microphone is also housed within the bulge, allowing me to talk hands-free. Another squeeze hangs up, and the music fades back in, picking up where it left off. The iPhone never need leave my pocket.
