DesignAday

My name is Jack Moffett. I am an Interaction Designer with over ten years of experience. According to Herb Simon, that makes me an expert, so I must have something worth sharing. I have started this venture as an exercise to spur critical thinking about my chosen profession. I hope that others may find it thought provoking as well.

DesignAday will present a brief thought about Design every weekday.

IxD Journals

As evidenced by my last post in this series, there are a lot of great books about Interaction Design and its sister domains. There are also a lot of excellent online journals.

Johnny Holland - “Johnny is an open collective talking, sharing and finding answers about the interaction between people and products, systems or processes.” Founded by Jeroen van Geel, it’s an online magazine, as well as a video channel (JohnnyTV) and podcast (Radio Johnny).

Boxes and Arrows - “Boxes and Arrows is devoted to the practice, innovation, and discussion of design; including graphic design, interaction design, information architecture and the design of business.” This peer-written journal has been publishing for a decade, and its archives are chock-full of IxD goodness. If there is a particular topic I want to find articles about, I’ll often search Boxes and Arrows before going to Google. They also have a podcast.

Core77 - “Core77 publishes articles, discussion forums, an extensive event calendar, hosts portfolios, job listings, a database of design firms, schools, vendors and services. Core77 provides a gathering point for designers and enthusiasts alike by producing design competitions, lecture series, parties, and exhibits.” While originally targeting Industrial Designers, Core77 is massive resource for anyone with design in their title.

Design Observer - This journal covers the breadth of design with five channels and a collection of blogs. One channel, Change Observer, deals specifically with social innovation, while the Places channel covers design for the public realm. It is also the host of Debbie Millman’s Design Matters podcast.

A List Apart - “A List Apart Magazine explores the design, development, and meaning of web content, with a special focus on web standards and best practices.” Their content is categorize under seven topics: Code, Content, Culture, Design, Mobile, Process, and User Science. They have also published several useful books.

International Journal of Design - “The International Journal of Design is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal devoted to publishing research papers in all fields of design, including industrial design, visual communication design, interface design, animation and game design, architectural design, urban design, and other design related fields.”

UXmatters - “Founded by Pabini Gabriel-Petit in 2005, UXmatters provides insights and inspiration to both professionals working in all aspects of user experience (UX)—at every stage in their career—and students who are just beginning their journey in user experience.” It’s ugly, but it’s relevant.

Co.Design - Fast Company’s sub-magazine tries “to bridge the fuzzy border between design and business.” It’s not just good reading; it’s giving design an audience in boardrooms and executive suites.

Businessweek - Businessweek has a Design channel, sub-categorized under Innovation. This is also the home of Bruce Nussbaum’s column, Nussbaum on Design.

Have I missed one? Please add any links you feel are relevant in the comments. Also, be aware that I have only included resources that are free of charge. There are other fine magazines and journals that you can subscribe to, but I doubt that’s what you are looking for. As for blogs, they will be a different post entirely.
